Check text contrast for web accessibility

Readable text is fundamental for accessibility. Many users have mild visual impairments that make reading low contrast text difficult. Our tool calculates contrast ratio and checks WCAG compliance in real-time. Assess text readability based on font size, line height, WCAG contrast and usage context (mobile, desktop, print) for accessible typography. Instantly convert between HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK, adjust hue, saturation and lightness with real-time preview and check WCAG AA/AAA contrast for sRGB-compliant accessibility.

    WCAG contrast ratio explained

Ratio goes from 1:1 (no contrast) to 21:1 (maximum, black on white). WCAG AA requires 4.5:1 minimum for body text. This is the legal standard in many countries.

Difference between WCAG AA and AAA

AA is the recommended and often legally required level. AAA is the optimal level, particularly important for government, medical and educational websites.

Font size and weight for readability

Minimum recommended font size for web is 16px. Important texts (headings, CTAs) should be larger. Weight (regular, medium, bold) also affects readability and perceived contrast.

    Spacing and line height

WCAG 2.1 includes spacing criteria: line-height minimum 1.5, paragraph spacing 2x font size, letter-spacing 0.12em, word-spacing 0.16em. These parameters significantly improve readability.

    Text colors on different backgrounds

Test your text colors on all backgrounds in your design: light background, dark background, images, gradients. Text that passes on white may fail on a colored background or image.

    Automatic accessible color suggestions

If your combination fails WCAG tests, our tool suggests alternatives. It proposes variations of your colors that maintain visual harmony while achieving required contrast ratios.

Typography and readability for all ages

The recommended minimum size is 16px for body text, 14px for annotations. Ideal line-height is between 1.4 and 1.6. Combined with good contrast, it reduces visual fatigue by 30% on long reading sessions.
